What makes stoneware different from ceramic or terracotta mugs?

Higher firing temperature. Stoneware clay gets fired hot enough that it vitrifies - turns dense and essentially non-porous - which is why it holds up to daily use better than our terracotta pieces. 

Terracotta stays a bit more porous, with that softer, rustic finish. Stoneware is the one you reach for every morning without thinking about it.

Are these mugs dishwasher and microwave safe?

Yes, all of them. If a piece has hand-painted detail or a metallic glaze, hand-washing will keep it looking sharp for longer - but day to day, dishwasher and microwave are both fine.

Will the glaze crack over time?

Unlikely, if it's fired properly. The clay body and glaze contract at similar rates when stoneware is made right, so you don't get the fine surface cracking (crazing) that shows up on lower-fired ceramics after a few years. 

The one thing to avoid is extreme temperature swings - straight from the freezer into a hot oven, for example. That'll stress almost any glazed piece.

Where are your stoneware mugs made? 

Our stoneware pieces are handmade in Portugal in small batches, which means you may notice minor variations from one mug to another, such as slight differences in glaze pooling or texture. These are natural characteristics of the handmade process, not flaws.
