What makes a cork notice board eco-friendly?
For starters, the cork; cork is a natural, renewable resource that comes from the bark of a type of oak, harvested without harming the tree. There are no synthetic materials or chemical treatments involved in its production.
And then, its longevity. Despite its soft texture, cork is resilient and your notice board won't have to be replaced soon, meaning a lower impact on the environment.
Our notice boards are sourced from Portugal, home to the world's biggest cork oak forests, which keeps the supply chain short and supports a harvesting tradition that has protected these forests for centuries.
Do cork notice boards wear out from repeated pinning?
No: this is one of cork's many useful qualities. Cork self-heals, meaning the surface closes back instead of leaving a hole when a pin is removed.
This makes it far more durable than foam or fibreboard, which crumble with repeated use. A good-quality cork notice board used daily will stay functional for years, which, again, means no premature replacement and less waste.
Are cork notice boards better for the environment than foam or fabric boards?
By a large margin!
Foam boards are made from petroleum-based synthetics that don't biodegrade and can't be recycled, and many fabric boards use artificial fibres with similar end-of-life problems.
Cork is completely natural and biodegradable; it also outlasts both alternatives in everyday use, so the inevitable cost to the environment - transportation, for example - is spread out over a much longer lifespan.
Can cork notice boards be recycled at the end of their life?
Anything made of 100% natural cork is biodegradable and can be recycled - check with your local recycling facility for the right route.
The important caveat is that not all cork boards on the market are what they appear to be. Some use only a thin cork layer over a synthetic fibreboard core, which makes recycling harder and reduces their eco-friendliness.
Our notice boards use natural cork throughout, so when they reach the end of their life, disposal is as clean as the rest of their story.
