What makes homeware eco-friendly?
For starters, the material. Eco-friendly homeware is made from natural, renewable or recycled materials that have a low impact on the environment - both during production and throughout their life in your home.
But materials are only part of the story: where and how things are made matters just as much. Mass-produced homewares often travel thousands of miles and pass through multiple factories before reaching your door.
Our products are handcrafted in Portugal by skilled artisans using traditional techniques, keeping supply chains short and supporting craft communities that have been working with cork, ceramic and terracotta for generations.
Is cork a sustainable material for homewares?
Cork is marvellously sustainable: renewable, biodegradable, involving no waste during processing. It even helps the environment, as cork oak forests are an important hub of biodiversity.
The trees that make up these forests are carefully stripped by hand every nine to twelve years; cork comes from their bark. The trees themselves are never cut down and continue to grow and absorb CO₂.
Our cork placemats, coasters, trivets and notice boards are made from cork that was harvested in this responsible manner.
How long do eco-friendly homewares last?
If they really are to be eco-friendly - even apart from practical considerations - homewares should be made to last. Cork, terracotta and ceramic are remarkably resilient materials when made properly.
Cork, despite its soft texture, is resistant to moisture, heat and mould, which makes it perfectly suited to the kitchen table. Our cork placemats and coasters, for example, handle daily use without warping or deteriorating, and with basic care they'll last for many years.
Are eco-friendly homewares safe to use with food?
Natural materials are typically a safer choice for contact with food.
Cork is naturally antimicrobial, making it perfect for placemats, coasters and trivets. As for our ceramic and terracotta pieces, they’re made using traditional glazing methods free from harmful chemicals. And our olive wood items - honey dippers, lemon squeezers and utensils - are finished with food-safe oils and contain no synthetic coatings.
If you're trying to move away from plastic or non-stick surfaces in your kitchen, natural homewares are a straightforward and worry-free way to go.
